In honor of International Women’s Day and the incredible women entrepreneurs shaping the local economy and community, Visit Tucson is launching a comprehensive directory of all women-owned businesses in Tucson.
The impact of women-owned businesses in the U.S. is undeniable. In Tucson, women-owned businesses make up 21.7% of all Tucson businesses. These women provide jobs and services for the community all while championing sustainability, diversity, and inclusion.
“It’s so important to invest in the equity and community that Tucson’s amazing women have built for our city,” Felipe Garcia, Visit Tucson’s President and CEO, said. “It’s their businesses and their ideas that help make our city such a vibrant and welcoming place. We want to encourage locals and guests to support that.”
The directory features iconic businesses like El Charro Café, The Coronet, and Tumerico. El Charro Cafe is owned by Chef Carlotta Flores, the third generation of her family to continue the legacy of the oldest Mexican restaurant in the nation in continuous operation by the same family. The Coronet, located in the historic Ferrin House, is owned and operated by Sally Kane. Clara Ferrin, who originally resided in the home-turned-restaurant, was instrumental in building Arizona’s first synagogue. Finally, Tumerico is a delicious vegan eatery owned by two-time James Beard semifinalist, Wendy Garcia.
Outside of owning and operating businesses, women in Tucson continue to lead and leave their mark in the city in numerous ways. Artist, Carly Quinn, creates vibrant, desert-inspired tile art using the centuries-old Cuerda Seca tile making technique. Local professional athlete Lael Wilcox has set records on the Arizona Trail while Maegan Lopez of the Tohono O’odham Nation is making waves educating others about Tohono O’odham agricultural practices at Mission Garden.
